If you’re one of the 10 million people in the UK who suffer with arthritis or other, similar conditions that affect the joints, you’ll know how debilitating the condition can be. From joint pain, tenderness and muscle wasting to reddened skin, weakness and restricted movements – these are just a few of the symptoms that compromise the quality of everyday life for sufferers.
But this is all set to change with a pioneering new treatment designed to relieve the pain and enable patients freedom of movement once again.
Who is affected by arthritis?
Osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, as well as other types of arthritis and related conditions, mainly affects adults over the age of 40 – with women being three times more likely to suffer with it than men.
But it’s not just adults who can experience arthritis. Around 15,000 children also experience the condition known as juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA). JIA can cause inflammation and pain in joints and can come on gradually or suddenly, lasting at least six weeks. The good news for JIA sufferers is that the symptoms often improve over time meaning patients can go on to lead a normal life as they get older. Unfortunately, this isn’t the case for older sufferers of arthritis.
What treatments are available for arthritis?
There is no cure for arthritis meaning the use of steroids, painkillers, and even joint replacement and osteotomy become a necessity for many sufferers to ease painful symptoms. These obviously come with their own risks associated with medication and surgery. But now a pioneering new treatment has been successful in treating patients in all stages of arthritis.
Lipogems injectable tissue therapy – a breakthrough for arthritis sufferers
Lipogems is an innovative new therapy option that takes existing body fat from the midsection and turns it into injectable tissue. This tissue can then be injected directly into problem areas such as knees, feet and hands to provide relief from the pain of arthritis.
The Lipogems micro-fragmented injectable fat can be used to repair injured or damaged tissue and provides cushioning and structural support that enhances your body’s natural healing process. The US Food & Drug Administration (FDA) rigorously reviewed the Lipogems System and has allowed the sale and clinical use of the product in the United States since December 2014.
By using the body’s own adipose tissue means the therapy treatment is a much more natural process and far less invasive than surgery. In fact, this procedure can be performed in under one hour in an outpatient clinical setting. It only requires local anaesthesia and there is minimal recovery time.
How is Lipogems treatment performed?
A physician makes a very small incision into the patient’s ‘love handles’ to collect a minimal volume of fat. This fat is then ‘washed’ in a closed-system device that uses only sterile saline solution to remove all impurities. The gentle process micro-fragments the fat, preserving the natural and beneficial properties of the tissue. Once this process is complete The Lipogems can be accurately injected into a specific treatment site with hardly any pain at all.
Reducing the symptoms of arthritis
The Lipogems treatment really is the way forward in the fight against arthritis. Once the treatment is completed, the Lipogems help to support the body in the reconstruction and repair of damaged or injured tissue reducing pain and allows patients freedom of movement once again.
